RENATA has been certified as an Official Copernicus Ambassador in Colombia

Colombia’s national academic network will strengthen training and access to open-access satellite data for research, environmental management, agriculture and evidence-based decision-making.

(Source: RENATA) In September, the Colombian academic network RENATA was certified by the European Union as an Official Copernicus Ambassador – the European Earth observation programme – and also became the managing body of the Copernicus Academy in Colombia. This designation will enable greater access to and adoption of open satellite data for higher education, research, innovation and the development of solutions in the country’s strategic sectors.

Through RENATA, this certification brings Colombia into the international network of Copernicus Ambassadors, comprising organisations from over 60 countries across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

According to the official statement issued by RENATA, this new role will promote the use of geospatial technologies and develop local capabilities for processing satellite imagery, facilitating applications in areas such as precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, natural disaster prevention and management, mining and strategic infrastructure.

RENATA reported that one of the main objectives of this initiative will be to strengthen the capabilities of students, researchers, teachers and professionals to interpret and use satellite data in addressing specific challenges, thereby contributing to a better understanding of territories and the development of evidence-based policies and actions.
